  • RTB15 Space Marine Mk7 Torso

    RTB15 Space Marine Mk7 Torso

This torso came out with the sergeant’s torso aimed to be used with the 1990 RTB15 Strike Force box set. One of the few metal non-riders to come in two parts.

The legs came in a close together and further apart stance, the latter of which is shown here.

The 1997 Legends catalogue shows the torso as 070282/1, and the shown legs as 070272/3. The skinny legs were 070282/4.

    The legs separated:

This guy came out in the 1990-ish Space Marine Strike Force box, and is Space Marine 2 from it. Part number RTB15/2. He’s on the left here:

RTB15 Space Marine Strike Force Box Set

This article looks at the 1990 box set Space Marine Strike Force, as well as covering the contemporary colour schemes shown on the box which were expanded upon in the previous month’s White Dwarf magazine. So if you’re looking for info about the RTB15 box set or on Rogue Trader-era Ultramarines, Dark Angels or Blood Angels colour schemes read on.

In White Dwarf #129 (September 1990) there was an article by Rick Priestly with sketches from John Blanche detailing the various armour marks of the Space Marines. The following month we got to see Mark 7 armour in the form which would become iconic through the Rogue Trader RTB15 Space Marine Strike Force Box.

It contained 15 miniatures designed by Jes Goodwin, and while it wasn’t the first Mk7 armour sculpted (Mark Copplestone did the Death Eagle Marines previously) Jes’ style was to set the mold for Space Marines for decades to come.

The miniatures were painted as Ultramarines, Blood Angels and Dark Angels on the box. White Dwarf #129 gives us the credit for the cover art – Jim Burns:

White bolters for Ultramarines rather than the later red, and silver for Dark Angels!

The metal torsos shown will be immediately familiar to anyone who grew up with 2nd. Edition Warhammer 40K. Copyright 1990 GW, made in the UK:

Not so much on the ends:

Some closeups of the box art. This face looks familiar:

Not sure if the below faces used other famous faces as references, if it did I can’t pick them:

    A menacing looking Apothecary:

Onto the contents! As was typical for the time there’s a polystyrene insert and the miniatures distributed between the compartments:

The bases have no markings under them:

    There are three torso variants:

White Dwarf #130 (October 1990) featured the Strike Force box at the back – and in the ‘Eavy Metal section you can see the squads more closely – the Ultramarines:

  • 4106 Terminator 09 Exo aka Saturnine

4106 Terminator 09 Exo aka Saturnine

This 1988 Jes Goodwin sculpt was simply marked “EXO” on the tab – no mention of the retroactively added Saturnine name in the flyers/catalogues/rulebook of the time.

I haven’t noticed that patterning on the soles of his feet on any other contemporary Space Marines! This guy appears in the flyers as 410609 Terminator Marine.

He can be seen in some artwork by Pete Knifton in White Dwarf #109 (Jan 1989):

  • 4106 Terminator 11

    4106 Terminator 11

This is one of the three alternative Terminator sculpts from the Rogue Trader era of Warhammer 40K. It was part number 410611.

Nothing on the tab on this one and the flash is pretty bad, particularly for GW at the time – probably the miniature I have most suspected is a recast.
