LE2 Imperial Space Marine

LE2 was apparently the first Space Marine sculpted in 1984, according to the 1997 catalogue! Neville has pointed out to me that LE1 was a May 1985 release, however, and it doesn’t make much sense that LE2 would have been released well before then, so I’m marking it as a 1985 sculpt.

He turns up in the 1991 Blue catalogue as Bolter 5, part number 070121/42 which is right amongst the C100 marines as far as part numbers go. He’s a Bob Naismith sculpt.

White Dwarf 93 has an entire squad of just him:

The Rogue Trader rulebook had this fellow in the Combat section who looks like him:

The USA blister for him looked like this – thankyou to the gentleman who provided these pics and doesn’t want to be credited!

I have had three or four attempts to paint this model since finding it and couldn’t get it done to my satisfaction painting it the way I usually do, so I tried something different. I had used an oil wash for the modern Terminator here, and tried that approach for LE2:

Something about the business of the gun design made it a challenge to paint – in the end I picked out two accent colours on top of the silver and then washed the lot.

Paints used:

  • Undercoat: Vallejo Mecha Black
  • Blue: Scale75 Art Cobalt Blue, highlighted by mixing in Kimera’s The White
  • Black: Scale75 Art Black
  • Lenses: Scale75 Spring Green, highlighted by mixing in Kimera’s Permanent Yellow and The White, shaded by mixing in Art Black
  • Orange: Kimera’s Orange mixed with Permanent Yellow and Velvet Ink White
  • Base: Kimera’s Red Oxide, then Soilworks Reddish Brown, then Natural Soil around the outside and on the lower parts of the model
  • Metal: Scale75 Black Metal, Kunzite Alchemy and the copper was Decayed Metal followed by Victorian Brass.
  • Leather: Kimera’s velvet ink Leather
  • White (Ultramarines emblem): Kimera’s Velvet Ink White
  • Wash: Scale75 Oil Moist Soil

The Rogue Trader rulebook gives a breakdown of the armour type:
